Caatinga is a biome that occurs in semi-arid regions of Brazil and experiences high risk of desertification. This biome has the lowest number of protected areas within the main Brazilian biomes and is suffering increased levels of degradation. The Caatinga restoration project aims to fight future desertification and understand how plant species diversity and presence of nurse species could influence the dynamics of vegetation expansion in semi-arid systems.
